A Note on Reader Responsibility
September 28, 2024A Note on Reader Responsibility
Lies are not what concern me, but rather the people believing them. There is a bit of victim-blaming in that sentiment surely, but responsibility ultimately resides within the individual and we must exercise our due diligence with information.
False information is fundamentally no different than it's ever been. It's simply more widely available. The responsibility remains the same.
It is your responsibility. It is my responsibility. Delegating that responsibility to a third party is itself irresponsible. If you do not take it upon yourself to seek out the truth, it will be sought out for you, likely by the exact people you do not want to do so.
It adheres to the law of supply and demand. And we do demand it. We demand it with our clicks. We demand it with our views. We demand it with our likes, our emojis, our shares.
If we want to change the status quo we have to first demand more from the reader, the individual.
You must seek out the truth for yourself. By not doing so you are at the mercy of others who will define the truth for you.
You have a responsibility to those around you to prevent this from happening.
Wisdom Through Reading: A Path to Personal Growth
There is a direct relation between your responsibility to those you care about and gaining wisdom. This alone should be a cause for action.
You can't have strong belief in your opinions if they are not built upon a strong foundation. Reading provides a strong foundation.
The person who says he knows what he thinks but cannot express it usually does not know what he thinks.
